The Blessings of Walking on the Path of Wisdom

As we journey through the book of Proverbs in the coming weeks, we'll discover that there are only two paths to walk on in this life and how each of those paths lead to a different destination.

Proverbs Summer Bible Study with Good Morning Girls

Yesterday in Chapter 1 of Proverbs we learned that Wisdom is a Person to love (Jesus). Today in Chapter 2 of Proverbs we also learn that Wisdom is a path to walk on in this life.

The other path spoken of in Proverbs that can be chosen to walk on in this life is the path of Folly. The path of Folly is crowded and leads to everlasting destruction. The path of Wisdom, on the other hand, is narrow and leads to everlasting life.

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. ~Matthew 7:13-14

We find three wonderful blessings as a result of walking on the path of wisdom in our reading of the book of Proverbs. Once you have responded to the call of Wisdom and have committed to walk on the path of Wisdom with God's grace to strengthen and guide you, then you can be assured of three blessings of walking on the path of Wisdom.

Blessing One: Wisdom Protects Your Path (Proverbs 2)

Blessing Two: Wisdom Directs Your Path (Proverbs 3)

Blessing Three: Wisdom Perfects Your Path (Proverbs 4)

We will learn more about blessings two and three later this week, but for today let's focus on the blessing of protection we find in Proverbs 2 when we walk on the path of Wisdom.

The father continues to teach his son in Proverbs chapter 2 about Wisdom. It's so important that our children are learning in our homes about the two paths that await them in this world. This loving father is taking seriously the command by God to teach his child about Wisdom {Deuteronomy 6:1-9}. It is the hope of all parents that our children will listen and obey the Godly principles we have taught them in our homes so that God's Word becomes the lamp for their feet and the light on their path {Psalm 119:105} when they venture out into this ungodly world as adults.

Our Response to God's Word

We learn in verses 1-9 of Proverbs chapter 2 eight ways we are to be responsible toward the truth of God's Word:

1. Receive/accept God's Word (verse 1)
2. Hide God's Word in our hearts and minds (verse 1)
3. Listen with our ears to God's Word (verse 2)
4. Apply God's Word to our heart (verse 2)
5. Cry after knowledge (verse 3)
6. Lift up our voice for understanding (verse 3)
7. Seek for wisdom (verse 4)
8. Search out wisdom (verse 4)

These are responsibilities that need to become daily spiritual disciplines in our lives as we walk on the path of Wisdom. Verses 7-8 tell us of the blessings of protection we receive as we walk in obedience to these eight responsibilities we have as children of God.

He holds success in store for the upright,
He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for He guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
~Proverbs 2:7-8

This is our promise of blessing from God to protect us from the enemy! Why would we not want to soak in the Word of God and seek after Wisdom for this life? Life is busy - I get it, really I do. Time is a precious commodity these days, but time is growing short, too, my friends. Just turn on any evening news program and you can see that this world is growing darker and darker day by day.

What's It Going To Take?

Maybe we need to take a look at our planners and our calendars to see what needs to be removed in order that we can have the time we need for these eight responsibilities to become the spiritual disciplines in our lives that they need to be as God's children. I know I've had to do this in my own life. I can tell you I haven't really missed those things in my life I had to remove in order that I could spend time in God's Word every day. Not only do we need to be doing this for our own spiritual lives, but we need to be teaching these spiritual disciples to our children as well. They learn by our example. Just today as I was having my quiet time, my 14-year old son interrupted me so that he could read Psalm 150 to me, which is the chapter he picked out today for this daily time in God's Word.

This summer Bible study in Proverbs is just the place to begin for you and for your children. It's not too late to join me - we are only in Day 2. The Dig Proverbs (The Dig for Kids) is a wonderful resource you can use with your children that will help them grasp the truths of Proverbs for their young lives. I'm using The Dig Proverbs this summer to teach my son the truths contained in Proverbs. You can too.

Come along with me and let's walk with God through the pages of Proverbs and soak in His Wisdom for our lives. Let's learn together about the blessings of walking on the path of wisdom!

Walking in His Grace,
Laurie
