Reading Comprehension

How We Used Super Teacher Worksheets

I absolutely love Super Teachers Worksheets! I used the math worksheets and the reading comprehension worksheets with my son in our homeschool as a way to reinforce weaknesses in his learning which is delayed due to his special needs.

I used the worksheet generator to create my own math worksheets for my son so he could practice his subtraction facts. I will be making more worksheets to use as practice for addition, multiplication and division. I love that I can save all of my worksheets that I create and reprint them at any time. This will be a great time-saver for me! Especially if there is a particular worksheet that my son might struggle with and we need to go over again.

The reading comprehension worksheets were very helpful to use with my son to build his comprehension skills.

I'm using the spelling lists in our homeschool as well. You can print off the list of spelling words each week and use the worksheets that go along with them for practice work during the week. I had my son write out the list of spelling words on Monday and quizzed him on Tuesday. Any words he missed on the spelling quiz were assigned to write again on Wednesday and Thursday with the final spelling test on those missed words taking place on Friday.

I love the filing cabinet that I can use to save the worksheets I've used. There is a handy icon at the top of the menu bar that you can simply click on to save the worksheets you find and use on Super Teacher Worksheets.

My Opinion of Super Teacher Worksheets

As I stated earlier in my review, I love using Super Teacher Worksheets! There are so many printable worksheets available with just the click of my mouse. If you're looking for printable worksheets to use in your homeschool, you will definitely want to check out Super Teacher Worksheets! This is a completely online program so you will need a computer or laptop, internet access, and a printer.

You can connect with Super Teachers Worksheets on the following social media outlets:

Go Science DVDs Review

I love trying new things in our homeschool science studies! Library and Educational Services offers all of their products 30% - 70% off, and I recently had the opportunity to review two of their Go Science DVDs in our homeschool.

Go Science Review

Go Science DVDs are seven in total and contain 80 science demonstrations by Ben Roy. Ben is the former director of a science program that was televised, and he teaches science methods at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Each of the demonstrations points to our Creator God with a spiritual application to apply to our lives. These DVDs are recommended for ages 4-12. The price for each DVD is $8.97 - 40% off the list price of $14.95! You can get all 7 Go Science DVDs for $59.82 - 40% off the list price of $99.70. To view these DVDs you will need a T.V., a DVD player or a computer that has the capacity to play DVDs. If you want to do the science demonstrations with your kids (and trust me, you will!), there are certain supplies you'll need for each one, and Ben lets you know at the beginning of the demonstration what those supplies are. Teacher prep is minimal, but I do recommend that you view the science demonstration beforehand so that you can get a list of supplies you'll need and an idea of what you and your kids will be doing.

The two science volumes we received for this review of Go Science DVDs were:

  • Volume 6: Chemistry (Run time: 59 minutes)

Go Science Review

  • Volume 7: Engineering, Design, Flight (Run time: 56 minutes)

Go Science Review

Other volumes included in these science demonstration videos are:
  • Volume 1: Sound, Gravity, Space (Run time: 78 minutes)
  • Volume 2: Life Science, Weather (Run time: 60 minutes)
  • Volume 3: Air (Run time: 55 minutes)
  • Volume 4: Motion, Friction, Electricity, Light (Run time: 55 minutes)
  • Volume 5: States of Matter, Water (Run time: 60 minutes)

Our Experience with Library and Educational Services and Go Science DVDs

I am so pleased to have discovered Library and Educational Services! I love their discount prices on homeschool curriculum! We have had so much fun with the Go Science DVDs. I love how Ben engages the live audience of children for his science demonstrations. He always uses three of the children as helpers for the demonstrations. Maxwell the dog is such a cute mascot that you'll see with the kids in the audience. He looks like our own dog! At the beginning of each demonstration Ben presents a science question that is answered by performing the science activity. I love how Ben always has a spiritual connection to God as our Creator at the end of every science demonstration and a life application that we can also discuss afterwards.

Here is a picture of our Leaning Tower of Lyra that we made in one of our science demonstrations. In their demonstration, Ben used eleven pieces of wood. We used VHS tapes. This science demonstration had the goal of finding the center of gravity. Ben talked about balance and gravity beforehand giving life examples of needing balance to ride a bike and to stand on one foot. In order to do that we have to find the center of gravity.

Library and Educational Services Review
We were able to find the center of gravity and have these videos lean over our desk without falling!

You and your kids are going to love the science demonstrations Ben Roy has presented in these Go Science DVDs. I cannot wait to get them all! Ben makes learning science fun with Go Science DVDs. Are your kids on summer break and need something to beat the boredom blues? Get the Go Science DVDs and let them have fun with the demonstrations. They'll be having so much fun that they'll forget that their learning too!

Laurie

Supercharged Science Review

Science is a subject in our homeschool that I always seem to be trying to find something new in which to use. We mostly use textbooks in our study of science, along with living books. That is why I was excited about the opportunity to do a review for Supercharged Science. I was given an e-Science Premium Membership which I used as part of our homeschool science curriculum with my son.

Supercharged eScience Review

What's Included with an E-Science Premium Membership to Supercharged Science?

Supercharged Science is an online science curriculum created by Aurora Lipper that can easily stand alone in my opinion or be used alongside your current homeschool science curriculum. You will need a computer and internet access, plus the supplies for the experiments and activities.

Here is a list of everything that is included with an E-Science Premium Membership:
  • Videos of Aurora teaching real science - just like in an actual classroom. She is very thorough in her teaching and experiments.
  • Instant access to hundreds of science activities, experiments and projects with textbook type reading to support the material in her videos. You can use this online science program as your homeschool science curriculum or in conjunction with your current science curriculum.
  • Hands-on activities and experiments that are taught step-by-step through videos that guide you and your kid(s) through the activity or experiment.
  • Homework exercises/quizzes so you can see what your kid(s) are really learning.
  • A live tele-class every few weeks where you can connect with Aurora personally.
  • Parent resources are available to help you give your kids the best science education they can get.
  • A place to ask Aurora questions is available on the Supercharged Science website.
  • Recordings of everything so you and your kids can do the program on whatever schedule and at whatever pace suits your homeschool.
  • Each month you will be given access to an additional 1-2 units (60-80 experiments).
  • There are over 800 activities and experiments total in e-Science!

What is the Intended Age Range for Supercharged Science?

Supercharged Science is intended for all grade levels (K-12). Parental involvement will be very heavy for elementary grades in my opinion. It's also my opinion that a fairly reasonable amount of help will be required from parents as well for middle school aged children. Homeschool students in high school should be able to do this program on their own if they have a strong background in and love of science.

What is the Cost of an E-Science Premium Membership?

For the K-8 section, the price is $37 per month; and $57 per month for the expanded 9-12th grade material which Aurora says is good for advanced 5-8 graders too.

How We Used Supercharged Science

Since we already are into another science textbook, I browsed through the 20 units that I had access to on Supercharged Science with my e-Science premium membership. I selected lessons to work on during this review that we recently completed in our current science textbook that focuses on the days of creation.

Supercharged Science Grade Levels
You can browse Supercharged Science by Grade Level.

Supercharged Science Units
You can also browse Supercharged Science by available Units.

We chose to do the Astronomy lessons in Unit 7 of Astrophysics. Once we made our choice, I then printed off the textbook reading that was provided as a PDF file.

One of the experiments that we did for a lesson on "Star Charting" showed us how to chart a constellation in the night sky. This was lots of fun! Clearly defined directions, a video, and a supply list are always given for the experiments.

Another experiment we enjoyed in the Astronomy lessons was a lesson on "Magnetic Tornadoes" where Aurora demonstrated in a video how to make a magnetic tornado in two clear plastic 2-liter bottles. This lab was a physical model of what happens on Mercury when two magnetic fields collide and form magnetic tornadoes. Very cool!

Magnetic Tornadoes

And here's our video of how our experiment turned out with the magnetic tornado. It took a couple of good shakes to get the "tornado" going, but once it got started Caleb and I both thought it was pretty awesome!

My Thoughts on Supercharged Science

There is a wealth of information available at Supercharged Science. I personally had an overwhelmed feeling when I first logged on with our e-Science premium membership. First impressions count for a lot, and I really wanted to enjoy my experience with Supercharged Science. Another factor in my experience is the special needs of my son. I'm sure others will LOVE the site (and it is great!), but science just isn't something I focus on a lot in our homeschool with my son's special needs. The focus it takes for science with all the reading and experiments goes WAY beyond his attention span capabilities. Because of this, he quickly loses interest because of the amount of in-depth and analytical study science requires. I managed to browse through all the available units and narrow my choice down to a few that I thought he would enjoy and that we could use as reinforcement to the studies we have done so far in our science textbook.

Although we struggled through this review because of the special needs of my son, I think this is a very strong science program that is a great online science option for homeschoolers to use for their homeschool science curriculum. There is a plethora of material available on the Supercharged Science website to carry your student(s) through their years of homeschool science studies. You know your child's strengths and weaknesses. With that in mind, another great option that Aurora gives everyone who comes to Supercharged Science is a money-back guarantee in which she gives free access to all the lessons for 30 days so that you can make your own informed decision. If after the 30 day trial you realize that her program is not for you, she will give you your money back with no questions asked. That is excellent customer service for us as homeschoolers having to be very careful in how we budget our homeschool expenses and our monthly income.

I encourage you to connect with Supercharged Science on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Google + and on Aurora's blog. Aurora is excited about what she does and it comes through in her video presentations and email notices. Most importantly, her excitement and friendly attitude, brought a ray of sunshine in our homeschool experience with Supercharged Science!

Want to try it out for yourself? Aurora has generously provided a complete mini-program for FREE to my readers. It contains a small sample of science activities and projects taken from the e-Science program. Try it out with your kids today!

Laurie

Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions from ScienceandMath.com

Today I'm bringing you a review of Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions from ScienceandMath.com, a wonderful step-by-step video course provider for math and science. Since fractions is a math concept I have yet to tackle with my son in our homeschool, I jumped at the chance when the opportunity came up to review it as part of the TOS Review Crew!

Mastering 5th Grade Math

What's the Age Range for Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions?

The age range suggested is grades 4 - 6. Your kids will benefit from using this math video course because Jason Gibson, the instructor, becomes your own personal math tutor who does a fantastic job teaching about fractions! He thoroughly explains each lesson step-by-step so that a solid foundation is laid at the very beginning of your student's study of math fractions. For this reason, I believe Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1- Fractions would be suitable at any time you feel your student in the suggested age range is ready to begin their study of math fractions. For some this may be as early as 4th grade, while others may want to wait until 5th or 6th grade. You know your kids, so it's up to you when to begin your study of math fractions with them. You'll definitely want to enlist Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions when you are ready to begin!

What's Included with Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions?

Two disks are included in the video course of Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions. One is the DVD which includes the lessons, while the other is a CD that contains the printable worksheets for the lessons as well as an answer key.

Here's a peek at what your student will learn in Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions:

Lesson 1: Review of Fraction Concepts
Lesson 2: Writing Fractions as Words
Lesson 3: Finding Factors of Numbers
Lesson 4: Finding the Greatest Common Factor
Lesson 5: Finding the GCF of 3 Numbers
Lesson 6: Prime Factorization
Lesson 7: Equivalent Fractions
Lesson 8: Renaming Fractions
Lesson 9: Simplifying Fractions, Part 1
Lesson 10:
 Simplifying Fractions, Part 2
Lesson 11: Review of Improper Fractions
Lesson 12: Review of Mixed Fractions
Lesson 13: Writing Mixed Fractions as Improper Fractions
Lesson 14: Writing Improper Fractions as Mixed Fractions
Lesson 15: Thinking of Fractions as Division
Lesson 16: Writing Whole Numbers as Fractions

Everything is provided for you in Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions to begin your study of fractions in your homeschool. Additional volumes on fractions for 5th Grade Math are available for purchase as you and your student progress through your study of fractions.

You will find a free viewing of Lesson 1, along with the worksheet, on the ScienceandMath.com website so that you can try out the course before making your decision to buy it. You can also like them on Facebook to find out how other homeschoolers are implementing their resources for math help.

What's the Cost?

The download price of Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions is $14.99 while the cost for the actual 2-disk set (includes the DVD and CD with printables) is $15.99. Now that's a great price to have your own personal math tutor for fractions in your homeschool!

How We Used Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions

I printed off the worksheets and answer key from the CD provided and kept them in a 3-ring binder. We used this course four days a week in our homeschool. First, we watched the video lesson on my laptop. As I stated before, Jason did a wonderful job breaking down the steps so that my son could get a firm grasp on what he was teaching. Starting with the very first lesson, Jeff demonstrated what he was teaching with several different examples on his white board to ensure that the student was able to form a strong foundation with fractions. Following the video lesson, we worked together on one of the worksheets pertaining to the lesson which I had printed. Each lesson has more than one worksheet so that your student will get plenty of practice to solidify the teaching. Depending on my son's level of understanding, some days I would work with him on the first sheet so that I could help explain any areas that he needed assistance with. Other days, after he felt more comfortable working alone on the worksheet, I would simply assign the next worksheet for that particular lesson. With my son, I've learned that slow and steady wins the race, so we are taking our time going through the lessons. Repetition is key for him, so if we need to watch a video lesson more than once then that is what we do. Since I have all the worksheets on the CD included in Volume 1, I can reprint any that I need. I love that!

My Opinion of Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Fractions from ScienceandMath.com

This video course is exactly what I need to teach my son fractions! The lessons are explained step-by-step which makes it manageable for any student to learn. It's been a long times since I studied fractions, so I'm learning again too. Jeff Gibson is a wonderful teacher! He has taken the stress off of me trying to teach fractions to my son all by myself. It's so easy to just pop the DVD into our laptop and watch the video lesson together. When we get to the subject of math each day, my son always wants to learn more about fractions first before we work on any other math concept. That is a such a relief to me!

Science in the Beginning Review

Science is a subject in our homeschool that I find challenging. Most science textbooks are very dry and wordy. Add to that the expensive lab supplies that you have to purchase in order to do the experiments, and you've got a very unhappy moma who is trying her best to teach science in her homeschool.

I was so happy to have the opportunity to review Science in the Beginning by Dr. Jay Wile in our homeschool. This is the first book in his new elementary science series. I've heard many good things about his high school science books, so I was really looking forward to getting our copy of Science in the Beginning. The day our book arrived I immediately began looking through the pages and was very pleased with what I saw.

What's Included in Science in the Beginning?

There are a total of 90 lessons in this science book. There are 15 lessons for each day of Creation found in Genesis. Three of those lessons are optional "challenge" lessons. Dr. Wile gives two options for scheduling the lessons so that you can either do one lesson every other day allowing you to cover all the lessons in a typical 180 academic year, or you can do two lessons a week which is a great option if your children aren't necessarily begging to do science every other day.

There are experiments included for every lesson that do not require expensive equipment. Many of the required items are things you will most likely already have in your home. A convenient list is included in the introduction of all the items needed for the experiments. Items used in the challenge lessons are listed in red. This is very helpful for those who choose not to do the challenge lessons. Long-term experiments are not a surprise the day of the lesson because Dr. Wile places a note in a yellow box at the end of the previous day's lesson informing you the next lesson's experiment will take some time to complete.

There is a lesson review included at the end of every lesson which is divided according to the ages of your children. Younger students, older students, and oldest students each will have their own review that will not overwhelm, but will be a nice ending to their lesson. This is perfect for those who are homeschooling multiple-aged children.

The Helps and Hints booklet is an additional resource for the parent that contains the answers to the review questions, tests, and test answers. It is included with your purchase of Science in the Beginning.

You can find downloads for the table of contents, a text sample, a lab supply list by lesson, a consolidated lab supply list and the scope and sequence on Berean Builders if you want to take a look for yourself before you decide to buy. You can order Science in the Beginning from Berean Builders for only $39!

Our Experience with Science in the Beginning

We have been using Science in the Beginning for about two months now in our homeschool. We have completed Lessons 1-12 that focus on the first Day of Creation (Light). I'm choosing not to use the challenge lessons simply because of my son's special needs. I love how well-written these lessons are! Dr. Wile writes as though he is sitting there with you carrying on a conversation. He explains science in a way that my son and I can understand. I've really enjoyed learning alongside my son things that I had either forgotten or never even learned (in public school) since Dr. Wile writes from a creation standpoint. The experiments have given us hands-on application of what was taught in the lesson, and were easy to do with the step-by-step directions given by Dr. Wile. Best of all, my son actually wants to do science with Science in the Beginning! It's been a great addition to our homeschool!

I love that there is a Question/Answer service available to use if help is needed. If I get stuck or confused about something, I can go to www.askdrwile.com to ask my question. Registration to this website is free, and all previously answered questions are there for you to search as well.

To find out more about Science in the Beginning and the other titles in this elementary series from Dr. Jay Wile himself, you can go to his blog. I'm already looking forward to using the rest of his science books that will be coming out in this series!

Happy Homeschooling,

Laurie

*Disclaimer: I was given copy of Science in the Beginning in exchange for my honest review.
