The book of Proverbs is known in most Christian circles to be a book about wisdom. This is true, but we'll also see it's about walking in the knowledge God reveals to us and this requires obedience on our part.
Think of it as this formula:
wisdom = knowledge + obedience
We can have the knowledge of the right way to live this life - knowledge gained from time spent in God's Word - but wisdom is actually walking in obedience to the truth we soak in from God's Word.
Monday we start our journey through the book of Proverbs. We'll learn about godly wisdom, how we get it, and how we can use it in our lives.
Breakdown of Our Time in Proverbs
Our time in Proverbs will help us to see that Wisdom has three specific calls to us.The first call is the call to salvation {Proverbs 1:20-4:27}.
The second call is the call to true wealth {Proverbs 8}.
The third call is the call to life {Proverbs 9}.
We all know there is an enemy in this world, Satan, who is roaming this world like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour {1 Peter 5:8}.
Proverbs also addresses the call of Folly. We must be aware of the schemes of the devil that seek to take us off the path of Wisdom or even prevent us from getting on the path of Wisdom to begin with.
The first call of Folly is the call to condemnation {Proverbs 5}.
The second call is the call to poverty {Proverbs 6}.
The third call is the call to death {Proverbs 7}.
We'll learn about the contrasts {Proverbs 10-15} and the counsels {Proverbs 16-31} of Wisdom.
Soaking in the wisdom of Proverbs will end in a week long study of the Proverbs 31 woman.
What You Need for Our Proverbs Study
If all you have is your Bible and a notebook for taking notes, then you have enough. The other resources you can use if you choose are available for free over on the resources page at Courtney Joseph's blog, Women Living Well, home of Good Morning Girls.If you want to use the SOAK Bible study method, you can find out how on Courtney's blog. I'll be using Courtney's Bible Coloring Chart during our time in Proverbs. She has a short video tutorial on both of these Bible study methods over at Good Morning Girls if you're interested in either one or both.
I'm using Warren Wiersbe's commentary on Proverbs that is a part of his "Be" series. This is not required, but he is my most favorite Bible commentator and I've been using his books from the "Be" series during our journey of Reading Through the Bible with Courtney and the Good Morning Girls.
